General Bert Harris

General Bert Harris, age 90 of 8691 NC Hwy 113, Piney Creek, NC passed away Friday, June 9, 2017 at his residence. He was born December 21, 1926 in Alleghany County to the late Thomas Walter and Lura Cleary Harris. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, Sue Jacqueline Halsey Harris; one brother, Olen Harris. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and was in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. He was an active member of the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034, and was a proud member of the Sizemore Indian Tribe of the New River. He was passionate about politics, Carolina basketball, and NASCAR racing. He is survived by two sons, Billy J. Harris and wife Jamie of Stony Point, Kenny B. Harris and wife Cheryl of Piney Creek; six grandchildren, Seth A. Harris and wife Heather of Taylorsville, Ian Harris and wife Candice of Stony Point, Shane H. Harris and wife Courtney of King, Slade Q. Harris of Piney Creek, Bryseda M. Harris of Piney Creek, Brady M. Harris of Piney Creek; six great-grandchildren, Nathan Harris, Jasmine L. Harris, Kathryn M. Harris, Jackson I. Harris, Owen L. Harris, Oliver F. Harris; four sisters, Mae Hoffman of Newport News, VA, Mary Lou Harris of Mocksville, Mabel Crawley of Campbellsville, KY, Sue Andrews of Independence, VA; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service to honor the life of Bert at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 13, 2017 in the chapel of Grandview Memorial Funeral Home with Brother Hugh Miller officiating. Interment will follow in Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home and other times at the home of Kenny and Cheryl Harris, 8639 NC Hwy 113, Piney Creek, NC.
