Velma Estep Vaughn, a long time resident of Ballpark Road and recently Genesis, Alleghany center passed away late Sunday night, November 13th, 2016 at age 94. She was born September 10th 1922 in Emmorton, Md. She was preceded in death by her parents, Cery and Lillie (Brooks) Estep, two brothers; James and Woodrow Estep, two sisters; Viola Estep Church and Thelma Lee Estep Dills; one son, George Vaughn, her husband Howard Vaughn; and two grandsons, Doug and Kelly Vaughn. She is survived by sisters Elsie Estep Collins and Agnes Estep Joines of Sparta; one sister in law, Maxine Estep of Kernersville, one brother, John Alvin Estep and wife Jo of Carmel, California; sons Robert Vaughn and wife Sylvia of Downingtown, Pennsylvania; Harold Vaughn and wife Priscilla of Sparta; and one daughter, Edith Vaughn Bauer and husband Andy of Lake Ariel Pennsylvania; one daughter in law, Geraldine Sidden Vaughn of Sparta; She is also survived by eight grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, one great great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews; her very supportive next door neighbor, Wilma Crouse and her good friend and roommate Louisa Grube. A Celebration Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 24, 2017 at Antioch Cemetery in the Stratford community with Reverend John McCray and Mr. John Alvin Estep officiating. Arrangements are being coordinated by Grandview Memorial Funeral Home. After employment at Hanes, Carolina Narrow Fabric and Acme Super Market (in Paoli PA) she retired and devoted her time to gardening, birding, painting, family support and especially volunteering at the Family Resource Center of Wilkes Community College and as a Foster Grandparent at Sparta Elementary School.. She recently commented “I used to come and read to the people in the rest home now young folks come and read to me.” She volunteered as a scout leader for boys and girls, taught Sunday School and was a member of Sparta First Baptist Church and Red Hat Society. During her recent years Velma received help and support from family, friends and community organizations, especially Meals on Wheels, Services Unlimited, Alleghany Rescue Squad Hospice and her extended family at Genesis Health Care where kindness and loving care are standard, every day practice. In lieu of food or flowers please make a contribution or volunteer some of your time to your school, church or community organization as Velma did for others when she was able and others did for her when her abilities diminished.
