Carol Wyatt Burt, age 72, died Friday, May 13, at her daughter's home after a short illness. She was born February 5, 1944, in the Pine Swamp Community of Alleghany County. Born to the late Oscar and Clara Wyatt, she was the youngest of four daughters who were fondly referred to in their later years as "The Sisters" and who reconnected at retirement and spent many happy hours together. She is survived by her daughter, Claire Holloway Avella and husband David Avella, of McLean, Virginia and her two granddaughters, Emerson Lucia and Tinsley Alexis, who gave her much joy and love. She is also survived by her sisters, Ruby Wyatt Johnson of Yadkinville, and Mary (Lee) Wyatt Gaines of Lewisville, and her brother-in-law, Lee Shew of North Wilkesboro. Her parents, her sister, Pauline Shew, and her young brother, Little Howard, preceded her in death. Also surviving are her namesake and beloved Aunt Sue, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. She always looked forward to greeting and helping to feed the Wyatt Family members at their annual reunion in Sparta on the first Sunday in June. Carol was a graduate of Sparta High School, Davis Hospital School of Nursing and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical College of Georgia. She worked as a Registered Nurse for more than 45 years and retired as Director of Nursing from Seagraves at Ashe Memorial Hospital in 2009. She loved long-term care nursing and was a strong advocate for the care and protection of the elderly. She advised and nursed her family members through numerous illnesses and when anyone was sick in the family, the first thought was "talk to Carol." After returning to Alleghany County in early 2000, she found the place she dreamed of in her cottage on Pine Swamp Road where she spent many happy hours remodeling and repairing a house that her father had built. It included the small stream and pond that she had always wanted and loved and gave her the opportunity to observe nature as she knew it growing up. Since the birth of her first granddaughter, she had spent a great deal of time with her daughter's family including the beloved Emerson and Tinsley in northern Virginia. A memorial service for family and friends to honor Carol will be held on Saturday, May 28, at 11 am, at New Salem Baptist Church on Pine Swamp Road in Sparta. Carol was treasurer for several years of the New Salem Cemetery Fund and in lieu of flowers, she had requested donations be made to the Fund for maintenance of the Cemetery, c/o Linda Killon, 51 Horton Road, Ennice, NC 28623.
