Delmer Bryan

January 23, 1934 - January 15, 2021

Delmer Abraham Bryan, age 86, of 2883 US Hwy 21 South, Sparta, N.C. passed away Friday, January 15, 2021 at his residence. He was born January 23, 1934 in Alleghany County to the late Willie Neville and Cola Carter Bryan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, C.J. Bryan, Ferrell Bryan, and Clay Bryan; two sisters, Richilene Murrell and Lillian Bryan. Delmer had many hobbies, including woodworking, traveling, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed cars and motorcycles. Delmer started working for Lowe’s Hardware at the age of 17. He retired in 1971 at the age of 37, after working for 20 years. Delmer was a financial contributor along with Cecil Murray in the construction of Jones Funeral Home, which later became Grandview Memorial Funeral Home. He was also a member of Evergreen Junction, which is a group of local citizens that was organized to reconstruct the businesses on Main Street after the devastating fire of 1986. In later years, Delmer started cooking for himself and his wife, and kept the refrigerator and cupboard stocked with vegetables, meats, snacks, and paper products. He was ordained as a deacon of the Macedonia Union Baptist Church under the pastorship of Reverend E.R. Young in the 1970s; he served in that capacity until recently as his health worsened. Delmer was affectionately known as “PaPa” to his daughter, grandsons, granddaughters-in-law, and great-grandchildren. Delmer is survived by his wife of 67 years, Juanita Gambill Bryan of the home; one daughter, Diane Bryan of Sparta; two grandsons, Derek Florance and wife Sheryl of Kannapolis, Daryl Florance and wife Shonda of Greensboro; three great-grandchildren, Damia Florance, Dashaun Florance, and Jaxon Florance; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family requests your presence at the graveside service to honor the life of Delmer at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Macedonia Union Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Verl Brown, Jr., Elder Daryl Florance, and Reverend Chauncey Robinson officiating. A public walk-through viewing will be held Monday evening, January 18, 2021 from 4-6 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home, but the family will not be present. Due to the current COVID-19 regulations, our staff is committed to taking care of our guests and families that we serve.
