Retired Sergeant First Class Doris Lester Wilson, 82, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on March 10th, 2018. As a veteran who served in conflicts in Korea, Japan and Vietnam, he was awarded numerous medals and commendations. Doris was born on April 3, 1935 to the late Homer and Reva Greene Wilson. In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned to Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After twenty years of faithfully serving his country, Doris retired in 1973 with full military honors. Not only was he a brave and loyal soldier, his family knew him as a patient and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. On July 6, 1956 Doris married his life-long soul mate Rachel Walker Wilson and they shared 61 amazing years together as husband and wife. In addition to his parents, Doris was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Wilson Blevins. He is survived by his loving wife Rachel of the home; three daughters, Denise Wilson Robertson of Ennice, NC; Darlene Wilson Carpenter and husband Joe of Ennice, NC; Deloris Wilson Houser and husband Jeff of Roaring Gap, NC. He is also survived by one sister Kay Wilson Hawkins and husband Chris of Charleston, SC. Five grandchildren, Kellie Cleary and husband Mitch; TJ Arnold and wife Raegan; Dr. Michael Carpenter and wife Shelley; Bridgette Arnold; and Jason Robertson. Two step-grandchildren, Justin Houser; Kristin Houser Gatton and husband Drew. Six great-grandchildren, Cody and Amber Cleary; Austyn and Wyatt Arnold; Grant and Madi Carpenter. One step-great-granddaughter Meghan Cleary and one step-great-grandson Evan Houser. In addition to his immediate family, Doris was blessed with countless very special extended family members. Surviving are two nieces, Teresa Blevins; Sherry Blevins Bowman and husband James; three very special cousins, Gay Galyean, Pat Hunt, and Judy Baldwin whom Doris revered as his sister. Also surviving is a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family requests the honor of your presence at the Celebration of Life service to honor the life of Doris at 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 16, 2018 in the chapel of Grandview Memorial Funeral Home with Reverend Roy Houser, Reverend Eddie Wooten, Pastor Phil Edwards, and Brother Jeff Carpenter officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the residence. Graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Crab Creek Cemetery will full military rites conducted by Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034.
