Eddie Charles Coates
October 8, 1954 - October 6, 2017
Eddie Charles Coates “BIG”, 62, of Charlotte, passed away peacefully at Alleghany Genesis Wellness Home in Sparta, NC. Eddie was raised in the NW Charlotte neighborhood of Coulwood. It was in 1968 at Coulwood (then Jr High School) that Eddie met first year teacher and coach, Wayne Laughter. Coach Laughter took Eddie under his wing, made him a part of his family and eventually became his guardian. With him, Eddie began a lifelong passion working beside his “Pop” as football manager and the coach’s right hand man. For the following 47 years, he was affectionately known by Coulwood students and athletes as Coach Big. His longtime dedication to the school, football players, and to Coach is a story to be greatly admired. Eddie was also a longtime active member of the NC Blind Lions Club and Eddie never let his lack of vision deter him in any way. Eddie is preceded in death by his parents Edna Dowdle Coates and Grady Charles Coates, along with “Mom” Nancy Laughter. He is survived by his “Pop” Wayne Laughter and his “sisters” Amy and Julie Laughter, as well as his Aunt Dot Dowdle, Uncle Wayne Griffin, and 8 cousins Steve, Sheila, Donald Lee, Cindy, Terry, Elaine, Jan and Bill. A celebration of life and gathering of friends will be held in Charlotte at the fellowship hall of Christ United Methodist Church, 800 Belhaven Blvd, from 1-4pm Saturday, October 21, 2017. In Lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the NC Lions Club Sight Programs.
