April 28, 1930 - May 26, 2019
Edith Washington Bryan, age 89 of 717 Laurel Glenn Church Road, Sparta, NC passed away peacefully Sunday, May 26, 2019 at her residence. She was born April 28, 1930 in Alleghany County to the late Johnny and Annie Reeves Washington. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Kyle B. Bryan; six brothers, Paul Washington, Ray Washington, Claude Washington, Wayne Washington, Clifford Washington, and Page Washington; four sisters, Donese W. Bryan, Thelma W. Gambill, Ann Washington, and Cora Washington. Edith was a member of White Plains Baptist Church and an honorary member of Macedonia Baptist Church where her late husband and children were members. After the death of her husband, she put her faith in the Lord and was a very strong woman. She took her children to Sunday school and church every Sunday, no exceptions…. What did she like doing most: was taking care of others, cooking and baking, helping and assisting others whenever she could. She liked to play bingo at the senior center. Mom was a kinda quiet person; but, she was firm in raising her children. She didn’t mind using the fly swatter and switches to discipline us. She was a hard worker. She started work at an early age: cleaning homes, working at Charles Motel, restaurant work, and in private homes. She worked part-time until the summer of 2014. At that time she quit work, quit driving, and lost her independence. Her health begin to decline. Her great-grandson told her years ago, Ma, sit down and rest, every time I come up here you are always working. It is a lot of work cooking for our family. Finally, she started letting us bring a dish. We have lost our best friend; but, our hope is seeing her again. She is survived by her five children, Sheila Bryan of Sparta, Linda B. Cain of Winston-Salem, Keith Bryan of Statesville, Gerald Bryan of Conover, and Harold Bryan of Morganton; four grandchildren, Delta Cain, Dana Cain, Alex Bryan, and Jami Bryan; one great-grandson, Themus Jr.; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service to celebrate the life of Edith at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2019 in the chapel of Grandview Memorial Funeral Home with Reverend William J. Scott, Reverend Verl Brown, Jr., Reverend Douglas Gwyn, and Reverend Chauncey Robinson officiating. Interment will follow at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and other times at the residence.
