January 12, 1921 - March 19, 2019
Helen Hope Walker Carpenter, age 98 of Sparta, NC passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at home. She was born January 12, 1921 in Halifax County, VA to the late Edgar Franklin Walker and Georgia Daniel Walker. In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, William Merwin Carpenter, Sr.; one son, William Merwin Carpenter, Jr.; one daughter, Deborah Ann Carpenter; one brother, Frank Walker; and four sisters, Leora W. Shelton, Winona Walker, Mary Walker and Carol Walker. Helen Hope was born in South Boston, VA, the second youngest of seven siblings, into a tight-knit, loving Christian family. In high school she was “class poet” (!) and on the All State Women’s Basketball Team. After high school Hope went to secretarial school in Richmond, then landed a job with the Navy Department in D.C. One enchanted evening she met Sgt. William Carpenter, dancing, at the USO. They hadn’t exchanged names, so when Bill arrived the next Saturday night he asked if the “girl with the blue eyes” was there! They danced all night. Hope said they walked home in the snow, she in strappy heels, and her feet never touched the ground. They were married a year later in 1942. Three children followed, Billy Jr., Linda Carol, and Deborah. When Billy died in an accident in 1960, Bill was offered a job in Puerto Rico for one year. They stayed for 22! They had a wonderful time in Puerto Rico, many friends, gatherings, golf every week and multiple trips to Europe and the Holy Land. Hope was Women’s Island Golf Champion two years, a truly gifted athlete. Bill Blevins built their house in Glade Valley in 1977. When Bill died in 1985, Hope came home for good. She named the house Wildeblin, and called it the “house that love built.” Hope loved Alleghany. She played at High Meadows for many years, had many wonderful friends and especially loved her First Baptist Church. Hope loved life. She will be missed. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Carol Carpenter of Sparta; one granddaughter, Chelesa Alexandra Carpenter of Salida, CO; one brother, Daniel Walker of Reidsville; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family requests the honor of your presence at the Celebration of Life service to honor the life of Hope at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 23, 2019 in the chapel of Grandview Memorial Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Following the service all are welcome to join the family for a meal at the First Baptist Church. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Oak Ridge Cemetery, 128 Meadow Drive, South Boston, VA 24592.
