Karen Hartman Van Dyke

Karen Hartman Van Dyke, age 73 of Sparta, North Carolina, formally of Bath, New York, passed away Monday, January 19, 2015 from complications of Alzheimer’s. She was born September 4, 1941 in Morristown, New Jersey to the late Rolland Carl and Helen Schamp Hartman. She graduated from Hackettstown High School in Hackettstown, New Jersey and studied at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA where she became a registered nurse. She enjoyed reading and was an avid gardener. She lived most of her life in a rural setting where she enjoyed all aspects of that lifestyle. Karen was baptized United Methodist and was a Christian her entire life. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Dr. Douglas W. Van Dyke of the home; four children, Sarah L. Dowdell and husband Timothy of South Lyon, MI, Jennifer B. Lucia and husband Ralph of Mechanicsville, VA, Amy L. Hurley and husband Joe of Spotsylvania, VA, David C. Van Dyke and wife Iis of Indonesia; ten grandchildren, Elizabeth Dowdell, Joseph Dowdell, Nicole Dowdell, Ryan Lucia, Andrew Lucia, Jonathan Hurley, Matthew Hurley, Kate Hurley, Claudia Van Dyke, Bianca Van Dyke; one sister, Lynn H. White and husband Robert of FL. The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.
