Reverend Larry Thomas Atwood, age 74 of 113 Chestnut Grove Church Road, Sparta, NC died Monday, December 15, 2014 at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet, SC. He was born on October 13, 1940 in Alleghany County to the late Kilby and Lillie Evans Atwood. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Todd Atwood; his daughter, Kimberly Atwood Lumpkin and one sister, Patsy Jones. Larry graduated from Sparta High School in 1958. He served his country in the US Army for three years in France, Kentucky and Fort Jackson, SC. He worked for Lowe's for twenty-six years. Larry pastored New Hope Missionary Baptist Church for fourteen years and also Mt. Carmel Church of the Brethren. Larry's favorite hobby was riding and working with his horses. He is survived by his wife, Joy Moore Atwood of the home; one son, Patrick Atwood and wife Tammy of N. Wilkesboro; one daughter, Carla Atwood of Bardstown, KY; three stepsons, Jerry Johnson and wife Susan of Azel, TX, Pastor Joey Moore and wife Lisa of N. Wilkesboro and Nick Moore of Charlotte; one step-daughter, Julie Moore of Emerald Isles; four grandchildren, Dylan Atwood and wife Lauren of N. Wilkesboro, Brandi Kidd and husband Gary of Bardstown KY, Tiffany Leper and husband Brian of Bardstown, KY and Micah Lumpkin of North Richland Hills, TX; two step-grandchildren, Megan Moore of Wilmington and Erin Moore of N. Wilkesboro; four great- grandchildren; one brother, Boyden Atwood and wife Gelene of Boone; special friends, Roger Dancy and wife Christine of Litchfield Beach, SC; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family requests the honor of presence at the funeral service to honor the life of Reverend Atwood at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2014 in the chapel of Grandview Memorial Funeral Home with Pastor Phil Edwards, Reverend Varan Walker, Pastor Joey Moore and Pastor Shane Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Crab Creek Cemetery in Ennice. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service Thursday at the funeral home.
